As the main role of tyres is to keep your car in contact with the road, they play a vital role in the safety and stopping power of your car. To this end it is therefore vitally important that you pay attention to your tyres and look after them to ensure continued safety of your vehicle. One of the simplest and often overlooked ways of looking after your tyres is to keep an eye on the tyre pressure.

Having your tyres at the correct pressure will also help with fuel consumption, brake responsiveness and general handling of the car. It is a good idea to check this at least once a month as tyre pressure can change due to temperature fluctuations and leaks.

This tyre is showing severe damage caused by driving while underinflated (it was basically flat).

Without removing the tyre from the rim, it is often difficult to asses if any internal damage has been done. The groove in the outer sidewall on this tyre was a giveaway however of what we expected to find inside.

Certainly not a tyre that could just be patched!

When tyres are driven on, while under inflated on harsh ground, the sidewall can become pinched dramatically between the wheel (rim) lip and the road surface. This induces much higher heat loading through the tyre while also causing extreme wear/damage to the internal construction.

The cords showing in the fourth image form part of the tyres structure, allowing it to safely hold the vehicle weight, and tyre pressure. Once a tyre reaches this level of damage, it must be replaced.

If a puncture repair were to be attempted, the compromised structural integrity of the tyre would almost guarantee tyre failure.
